Benefits of newsletters

A thoughtfully-written newsletter can raise your profile with existing clients and attract potential new clients by establishing and increasing your credibility as an authority in your field.

Readers will begin to understand that your company may have answers for their questions and can understand their needs.  This can strengthen your relationships with existing clients and attract potential new clients.

Of course, to achieve these benefits your newsletters must be seen and read.  Here are some basic characteristics of an effective newsletter.

Making your newsletter effective

Be topical.  If there have been changes or developments at your organization, write about them.  Or, write about new products or new services that you offer. Tell your readers about new technologies, changes to the law or other news that might affect them in the near future and then follow up on the story in another newsletter later.

Make it readable.  Keep articles short and to-the-point.  Write in a conversational style that is geared to your audience.  When you have a widely varied audience, try to use simple language and short sentences.  If you must use technical terms, include definitions.  Use typefaces and type sizes that can be easily read by most people.  Break up text with images such as drawings or photographs.  Leave some white space — don't cram too much text onto the page.

Make it useful.  This may be the most important point of all.  Provide advice, "how-to" articles or other hints and tips that your readers might appreciate.  You can even solicit suggestions from your readers for subjects they would like to see covered in your newsletter.  Provide "how-to" instructions or alert the reader to special offers or new promotions.

Although it takes commitment and ongoing work to send out a newsletter, the benefits can be significant.  Think of ways to encourage response from your readers.  Ask your readers for feedback.  A topical, readable, useful newsletter can be like a satisfying conversation with the reader.
